Broos tells critics to ‘shut up’ after Mexico loss South Africa coach Hugo Broos has told critics to “shut up” and insisted he will keep doing things his way, after his defensive tactics were blamed for the team’s 2-0 loss to Mexico in their World Cup opener. He made the comments at a press conference ahead of Thursday’s match against the Czech Republic.

The defeat came after a flat performance in which South Africa created few clear chances and finished with nine men, two players having been sent off in the second half.

Broos was defiant at Wednesday’s press conference, telling his critics to “shut up.” He said he had coached for 40 years and accepted that criticism came with the job, but would keep managing the team his own way. “I do it my way,” he said.

He added that South Africa must beat the Czech Republic on Thursday to keep alive their hopes of advancing from Group A, having lost their opener. He hinted at a more attacking approach, saying the team could only improve “if we have the ball.”
